About Grandmother Ruth
Poet Ruth Scheer has written these zoo tales and a
captivating Christmas story to stimulate a child's wonder
and imagination. Grandmother Ruth, as she is fondly
called by her 30 grandchildren, loves children and is
eager for them to hear about God's beautiful world
through rhyme. She believes all children need a child-
hood. She inspires children and adults to read that
which is good and that which is beautiful.

Majoring in English with minors in music and French,
Ruth Scheer graduated with honors from Wichita (KS)
State University. Through the years she and her family,
including husband Harold, received other honors as well.

The Scheer family was named the 1973 Kansas Musical
Family of the Year. In 1987 Ruth was named Kansas
Mother of the Year. Performing with her husband,
children and grandchildren as the "Scheer Delights,"
Ruth plays the piano and accordion in family shows.

"I love God, my husband, children, nature, music, and
beautiful language," Ruth says.

What's Been Said...

Grandmother Ruth (Ruth Scheer) combines her love for
language and animals in a way that is sure to delight child-
ren and the adults who read to them. Her poetry relates
accurate animal facts with lively and colorful vocabulary.
We are pleased that the animals of the Sedgwick County
Zoo have been such an inspiration.

· Faye Grable - Illustrator
(1927-2004)

Faye Grable's enjoyment of color
and drawing started at a very early
age. She explored her gift of creat-
ivity at Wichita State University,
Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas
Newman University, and numerous
artist led workshops. Faye was a
member of the Art Guild of Wichita.

Faye's artistic talents offered opport-
unities to explore various media. She
worked as a graphic artist and a
teacher of fashion illustration and
pastel. Expressions of her creativity
included church fabric art, story illus-
tration, and working as a team with
her artist husband to create back-
drops for melodramas and dinner
theater. Faye and Jack had two
children and four grandchildren.

Faye Grable and Ruth Scheer were
friends from college sorority days.
They were sorority sisters in the local
sorority Pi Kappa Psi. They were kin-
dred spirits in their love for children
and beauty. Both Ruth and Faye be-
lieved in the old-fashioned virtues of
good taste and graciousness. Comb-
ining Ruth's musical poetry and Faye's
expressive art bring to life the best in
children's literature.
